Nightmares / Night Terrors
Nightmares are very common with young children, and mostly nothing to worry about, however if they persist and often cause distress in day to day living they are considered a sleep disorder.
With children, the most effective way of tackling persistent nightmares would be to discuss what they are and to explain that the dreams are not real to help them understand what is happening. This will reduce the anxiety involved with bed time.
Relaxation training such as CBT is a very effective way of dealing with nightmares, we can offer these services through a trained therapist. Nightmares in adulthood are more commonly associated with medication associated with Serotonin such as anti-depressants.
